There are some basic requirements for engine maintenance that are easy to forget when you’re busy, but when you’re reliant on your vehicles for work, it becomes even more important to make sure you’re taking care of your engine. We take a look at the key areas to help keep your engine in good health.
FUEL
A good tip for engine car is not letting your petrol or diesel get too low before refuelling.
This is because sediment and dirt can build up in the bottom of the tank, so if you use all your fuel before filling up, you’re pulling the grimier stuff up into the engine filter, increasing the chances of it getting into the engine and causing internal damage. It’s also worthwhile getting the filter changed periodically; depending on where it’s located you may need a mechanic to do this for you… unless you are one!
BELTS
You should also be checking the belts on your engine regularly. Working hard to keep your fan, water pump, alternator and air conditioner going, they do last a long time, but our tip is to turn them around slowly and check for cracks.
Getting worn belts replaced before they cause any damage can save you a small fortune in the long run.
DRIVING HABITS
Your engine and your fuel consumption are is significantly affected by your driving habits, both good and bad. Be mindful of the following and you’ll get more out of your engine (and your fuel tank):
– Change up and down a little sooner
– Accelerate gradually; watch your revs, under 3,000 is advised
– Use the brake less; slow naturally where possible
