The latest data on reported road casualties in the UK has been released by the Government, showing UK traffic accidents are on the rise again.
As our Tradesure customers are out on the roads more than most, it’s important to stay safe and keep your wits about you. This is because accidents can happen when you least expect them and often through no fault of your own.
Because of all of this, it’s vital that you have the correct motor trade insurance, whether you’re a dealer, mechanic or commercial tradesperson.
The report, by the Department for Transport, noted that in 2016 there were 1,792 reported road deaths in the UK, up 4% on the previous year. There were also 24,101 people seriously injured and 155,491 people slightly injured by traffic accidents.
The report also broke down how many of these accidents were involving each different type of vehicle.
Car drivers and passengers accounted for 816 of the 1,792 fatalities on the roads last year. This is unsurprising as cars make up a large majority of the traffic in the UK.
Location, Location, Location
As you would expect, some areas experience more traffic accidents than others, however the difference between certain regions is startling.
For instance, in 2016 Scotland saw an 18% rise in the number of fatalities; while the South East saw a similar 19% rise. However, London saw a 15% decrease.
The rise in car accidents across the UK can be linked to the fact that there was a 2.2% rise in motor traffic levels in 2016. More cars on the road would go some way to explaining the rise in incidents.
Some of the figures coming out of the latest report are concering, however if you look at them in context then things are a lot more positive.
Since 2006, the number of fatalities per year on UK roads is down a massive 44%, meaning Britain’s roads are significantly safer than they were a decade ago.
This could be down to a number of factors, with improved vehicle safety standards, road development and technological improvements all helping.
Traffic accidents can occur at any time, and so it is crucial that you and your business have the right insurance to protect you.
