Looking for a classic car but don’t want to break the bank?
The classic car market is always evolving, and while some cars are guaranteed to be their marque’s poster child for decades to come, the popularity of other models changes over time. Yesterday’s cult classics might be sat unloved in a barn today, and every now and then an unexpected model sees a surge in popularity. The cars we’ve picked out here can currently be picked up for a mere £5,000, and we think they deliver a bang for their buck.
1. MG F
The MG F is the first of our top five classic cars under £5000
MG produced its first new model since 1980. This was the MG F, a mid-engine roadster with two seats and it certainly brought a spark to the MG ranks with that famous hydragas suspension. The soft top handled firmly and assured you that you were in charge of the road.
With two engine choices, the MG F would hit 60 mph in as little as 7 seconds from a standing start if it contained variable valve control, and just 8.5 seconds in the 1.8l version. All that with roomy luggage space, and a comfortable interior.
2. Porsche 924
Number 2 on our list of top five classic cars under £5000 is the Porsche 924
The Porsche 924 deserves more respect than it gets given by the 911 purists out there. Replacing the 914 as Porsche’s entry level model, the 924 was an appeal to the masses. The 924 sent a clear message to potential buyers that you too can buy a Porsche – and they did, to the tune of 25,000 units by its second year.
It was development all the way for the 924. It soon received a five-speed manual gear box and it wasn’t long before the 924 Turbo was released with a KKK turbo charger, which lifted the brake horse power to 168. Today the 924 looks like a wise investment, especially if you don’t buy into the Boxster hype.
3. Saab 900 Turbo
Coming in at number 3 on our list of the top five classic cars under £5000 is Saab 900 Turbo
Built like a Mercedes, safe as a Volvo and cooler than a BMW the Saab 900 turbo exudes Swedish Stability. The Saab 900 Turbo is a car that certainly stands out from the rest. The 900 quickly jumped in to power when the eighties arrived and soon came the 16 v model producing 175 bhp. The Saab 900 is a reassuringly expensive buy on the second hand market with solidity and luxury a given. This car will do 200,000 miles without stopping for a breath and will do it in style.
4. Mk 2 Vauxhall Astra GTE
Number 4 on our list of top five classic cars under £5000 is this retro hatchback
We head straight to the eighties with the next car being the Mk 2 Vauxhall Astra GTE. This Hot Hatch really envisaged the style of the eighties with the mk 2 fast Astra hitting the high’s with the pace setting 16v model. 154 bhp with a digital dashboard back to the future in this retro classic.
5. Jaguar S-Type (1998-2008)
The S-Type is number 5 on our list of the top five classic cars under £5000
Upping the elegance factor, we move on to the Jaguar S-Type. This is a car to be taken seriously, even by the BMW 5 series that was its main competitor.
Jaguar was taking no prisoners when it came to the S-Type. It was an unapologetic, ferocious monster of an executive saloon, with an Eaton M112 Supercharger creating 400 bhp and allowing it to go from 0 – 60 mph in just over 5 seconds. In a car weighing 1,800 kg, this was a truly incredible feat.
So a great choice for up and coming cars of the past. All five cars are worthy contenders and will delight any potential collector. Who knows you may even see your car double in value, we will wait and see.
