New Mobile Phone & Driving Rules

27 Feb, 2017
Woman on phone

FROM MARCH 2017, GETTING CAUGHT USING YOUR MOBILE PHONE WHILST DRIVING WILL MEAN MORE POINTS AND BIGGER FINES.

New rules will see drivers hit with £200 fines and six penalty points for using a mobile whilst driving. The current law is £100 and three penalty points.

Young motorists will be particularly affected by the changes because drivers could face having their licence revoked after a first offence, so please take note if you’re in one of your first jobs as a commercial tradesman, courier or car dealer.

More experienced drivers also risk going to court if they offend twice, with a possible fine of up to £1,000 and at least a six-month driving ban. The new rules will apply in England, Scotland and Wales.

Many of our Tradesure customers combine driving with constant communications during a working day – it’s a part of their business, so hands free kits and following the rule is more important than ever. It has been illegal to use a hand-held phone or similar device while driving or riding a motorcycle since December 2003.

A report published by the RAC in September 2016 stated that 31 per cent of drivers now admit to using a mobile phone when driving, up from eight per cent in 2014, so it seems that more of us are having a cheeky glance or sending a quick message when out on the road.

Please be safe and don’t use your phone whilst driving, it’s just not worth it and it could lead to you losing your source of income. Even worse, it could lead to injury and the loss of life.
